Decoding Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye disease that damages the macula, an essential part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision.

There are two main types: dry macular degeneration, characterized by the gradual breakdown of retinal cells, and wet macular degeneration, where abnormal blood vessels leak fluid into the macula, causing rapid vision loss.

Recognize The Signs of AMD

Common symptoms of AMD include:

  • Blurred or distorted vision.
  • Dark spots or gaps in your central vision.
  • Difficulty recognizing colors.
  • A general decrease in brightness.
  • Difficulty adjusting to light changes.
  • Seeing shapes or people that aren’t there (a rare symptom known as Charles Bonnet Syndrome).
